“It’s going to keep falling down if you don’t let the glue dry sufficiently first! Work on something else while it’s drying, please!” Mavis shouted instructions left and right. Her clothes were the sole black items amidst a hurricane of colorful streamers, papers, and banners. The eye of the storm. “Jackson, let’s tie that part up with the string instead. Paige, you need to alternate the gold and blue; there’s a doubling up happening over there.” She stood between two trailers being transformed into floats for the Homecoming Parade. Elle was impressed at how she simultaneously tracked every step for both projects. Mavis was so tuned into what was happening with the floats that she overlooked Elle’s presence.

“Great job, wow, you’ve really got this!” Mavis jumped and turned wide eyes onto her friend. Elle laughed, “Sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you. You were in the zone.”

Mavis lowered her voice so only Elle would hear, “Thank God you’re here. I’m losing my mind. Look at him.” She sneered and barely nodded her head to the left.

Elle followed her nod. A rotund man sat atop a cooler, aiming a handheld misting fan at his face. Fall weather had begun, and it wasn’t particularly hot outside, but the man was still sweating profusely. “Who is that?”

Mavis rolled her eyes maliciously. “Stewart. Mr. Greckle. You don’t recognize him? He’s the art teacher from Everest Middle.”

Elle was shocked. “I… have somehow never seen this person. How does that work?”

“Pfft. I’m not surprised.” Mavis sighed. “Nor am I at this,” she gestured around, “I always help with the Everest High Senior float, but last week Stewart asked if I’d help with his stinking float too. And I knew it; I knew I’d be doing all the work, but I couldn’t bring myself to say no.”

“Oof, the worst. You’re doing great, though!”

Mavis toed at a clump of grass. “Doing them both at once was a mistake.”

“I’m here to help, and Derek’s on the way. Tag me in, coach!”

Mavis chuckled. “I hope I don’t crush that enthusiasm. This one is supposed to be a tiger eating an eagle. The middle school’s is a little easier, your basic platform, and they’re going to have people in tiger suits ride on it.”

Elle stuck out her lips and nodded. “So Darton are The Eagles. Got it. I have no idea how to make giant animals, but if you tell me what to do, I’ll do it.”

“Don’t worry; the kids will want to do most of the work. We’ll mainly supervise, but if you can help decorate the rim of the middle schools and then pile on the hay bales, I can focus on getting the papier-mâché going. Which will take forever, even under the best circumstances.” They exchanged a smirk, and Elle took off toward the middle school float.

She knew some of the students decorating from her 8th-grade class. Willa, Rob, Martin, and Francesca introduced her to their classmates. Working with her students outside of the band room was novel.
